Our History

Regional Residential Services Society (RRSS) was incorporated under the Society’s Act of Nova Scotia in 1979. The formation of the organization was the culmination of joint initiatives of the Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford-Sackville municipalities, their respective advocacy groups representing individuals with intellectual disabilities, and the Nova Scotia government. Since its inception RRSS has provided supports to adults with intellectual disabilities from these communities.

Within three years the number of homes operated grew from two to eight, and with the addition of Supported Apartments, the number of individuals supported by RRSS had grown to more than eighty individuals.

It quickly became clear, through experience and a review of trends in practice in other jurisdictions, that comprehensive planning, one person at a time, could result in improved experiences, opportunities, and outcomes. As such, planning and development from 1982 forward evolved toward smaller, more individualized, living arrangements. These homes and apartments are the housing model of choice for one third of the individuals supported by RRSS. Reducing the number of individuals living in larger group homes remains a priority direction.

RRSS is a non-profit organization, and a registered charity employing 450+ dedicated staff supporting 150+ adults with intellectual disabilities in their 50+ homes and apartments within the Halifax Regional Municipality.
